The “Borno Development Initiative” was founded in 1998 with the main aim of Enhancing the Primary Health Care in the rural areas of Borno - with special reference to Musune Village Unit, Marte Local Government.
Due to the economic difficult situation of most Nigerians in recent times not many people are still in the position to get in time or at all medical treatment to hospitals. This is even more so in the rural areas were hospitals are far away and transport expenses or transport at all is not available in every situation. That is why the rural areas are hardly approached and aware, or have access to certain projects. The medical facts concerning women and children are alarming: Every fifth child born in the rural area is dying. Northern Nigeria is regarded as one of the areas in the world with the highest mortality rate of children! Women who are known as ‘problematic cases’ in birth-giving - examined by traditional midwifes and health workers - are still not brought to a hospital for save delivery! Due to the results of the sample collected in 1997 even though women are willing to attend western medicine before a medical problem would rise to an extent where nothing can be done - especially for problems connected with their children - the opportunity for them to reach a competent doctor is nearly zero! The marriage age in the northeastern region of the Borno women is between 12 and 15 years; i.e. that the possibility of special problems which are related to early marriage is high!
In addition to gynaecological sphere the ophtalmic problems are immense. That is why the “Borno Development Initiative” has sent since 1998 each month two doctors to the village unit of Musune within a ‘circulating system’, e.g. that the doctors should not be permanently posted to the area - but a reliable and permanent structure of present doctors was created.
For their fundamental support and financial impact, BDI is thanking the “Kai Henning Fund” in Munich for their generousity
