New publication series on Borno
Borno Sahara and Sudan Series: Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences (BSSS).

Thirty years into its existence, in October 2005, the Vice Chancellor of University of Maiduguri approved a proposal for the establishment of a publication series for monographs. The name ”Borno Sahara and Sudan Series: Studies in the Humanities and Social Science (BSSS)” was agreed upon and G. Seidensticker-Brikay and Kyari Tijani were appointed joint Editors of the Series.

The Series will focus on the larger Central Sudan or Trans-Saharan region and publish research results from the Humanities and Social Sciences, including PhD theses of outstanding quality.

So far, eight more or less print-ready manuscripts are awaiting publication in the BSSS.

Vol. I, i.e. R. Paret, Sayf Ibn Dhi Yazan. An Arabic folk epic, a translation from German to which are appended remarks on Borno, has been printed and is for sale.

Vol. II, i.e. Kyari Mohammed, Borno under Rabih Fadl Allah, 1893 – 1900: The rise and crash of a predatory state, is presently with the printers and expected to be available for sale within the next few weeks.

Subsequent monographs will focus on: Toponyms in Borno and Yobe States (Eva Rothmaler, vol. III); The Yedina (Buduma) (Walter Konrad, vol. IV); Political and administrative developments in pre-colonial Borno (Kyari Tijani); Music practice at Islamic courts in North-East Nigeria (Raimund Vogels); History, economy and women’s lifestyle in a Kanuri ‘little kingdom’ (Editha Platte); Hunters’ songs in Borno (Bosoma Sheriff); Political and economic transformation of a Kanuri peasant society (Holger Kirscht). With the exception of vols III and IV the titles are in no particular order yet.

Subscriptions to the Series will be highly welcome with an indication of number of copies desired and should be addressed to G. Seidensticker-Brikay, Centre for Trans-Saharan Studies, University of Maiduguri, P.M.B. 1069, Maiduguri, Borno State/Nigeria, e-mail: gilliam22002@yahoo.co.uk.
