An unassuming, dynamic and humane personality with down-to-earth approach to issues, Alhaji Bukar Gana is generally rated as one of the most honest and open-minded elders of Borno State. He was born in Maiduguri on 17th December 1945. He started his early education in 1950 in Maiduguri at a Sangaya (Traditional Quranic) school. He also attended Hausari Primary School and Bama Senior Primary School between 1951 and 1957, at the end of which he obtained Senior Primary School Leaving Certificate. Between 1958 and 1963, he studied in the former Provincial Government School Maiduguri (now Govt. College Maiduguri), where he obtained the West African School Certicate (G.C.E. ‘O’ Level Certificate). After his secondary education, he proceeded to the Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna where he studied for a year (1964 to 1965). He was also in the Anti-Fraud and Detective School, Lagos in 1968. Between 1973 and 1977, he was a student of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU), where he achieved Bachelors degree in Social Science. Before proceeding to the University, he was one of the few students of Borno who had achieved G.C.E. Advanced Level Certificate. His A. Level Certificate was in Economics, Government, Hausa and English. In 1988, he attended the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), Badagry, Lagos. This earned him ‘Advanced Public Enterprises Management Certificate’ of the College.

1975/77 First Managing Director/ Chief Executive of Herwa Shipping and Clean Services Ltd.
1978 Director/Deputy Chief Executive Herwa Press Ltd; Publishers of a Lagos Weekly Tabloid- The Nationalist.
1979-82 Borno State Commissioner for Economic Development and Member of the State Executive Council.
1980-82 Chairman, Coordinating and Appraising Committee on World Bank Loan for Maiduguri Water Supply Project and Borno State Agricultural Development Programme (BOSADP).
1980 Member National Joint Planning Board with the responsibility of articulating all aspects of the Nation's economic planning and development and making recommendations to the National Economic Council.
1980-82 Borno State Government Chief Delegate on sourcing and negotiation for foreign loans/Technical partners for some key industrial and capita projects.
1981 Chairman Borno State Plan Implementation Committee with the responsibility of appraising the implementation of all Capital Projects as approved in the 4th National Development Plan, 1981 -85.
1982 Interim Chief Executive/Director North-East Line Transport Corporation (now Borno Express) with the view to streamlining its management structure and operational efficiency.
1982 Member Borno State Local Revenue Committee with the responsibility of identifying ways and means of improving local revenue generation.
1984 Delegate World Bank Conference, London on Third World Debt..
1985 Sole Administrator Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
1986 First General Manager/CEO, Borno Supply Company Ltd: (Govt: Agency for Procurement and Distribution of Essential Commodities).

Alhaji Bukar Gana has two publications to his credit. These are: NIGERIA Political Development, 1945-75: Survival & Growth of State Owned Enterprises (A case study of Borno Supply Co. Ltd) and Foundation for Industrial Development of Borno State.
He is widely traveled. An alphabetical order the countries he has visited are Austria, Canada, Chad, Cote d’Voire, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Malaysia , Niger, Pakistan, Poland, Saudia Arabia, Singapore, Togo, UK, USA, United Arab Emirates and Yugoslavia,
His hobbies include Farming, Horse riding and Reading.
