Citation of Alhaji Abba Kyari Kura

Popularly known as A.K. Kura, Alhaji Abba Kyari Kura was born in 1935 in Galangi village of Kaga Local Government Area. He is a namesake to Alhaji Abba Kyari Kura Umar Garbai, who was then the District Head of Kaga.
A.K. Kura attended Nguru and Damboa Elementary Schools between 1943 and 1947. From 1947 to 1951, he was at the famous Borno Middle School. Upon finishing the Middle School, he attended Clerical Training College Zaria from 1952 to1953. From 1955 to 1956 he was at the the Institute of Administration, Zaria. Four years later he gained admission into Pitman’s Central College, London where he did Commercial Teachers’ Course. Other courses he attended include ‘Techniques of Instruction in Public Administration (R.I.P.A.) London (1966), United Nation’s Workshop on Training at the University of Lagos (1973), and Advanced Management Course at the University of Pittsburgh, USA (1977).
Starting work as a 3rd class clerk in 1953, A. K. Kura rose to the rank of Senior Instructor, Federal Training Centre, Kaduna in 1968. From 1969 to 1976, he was the Principal of the Staff Training Centre (FTC), Potiskum (now Institute of Management Studies, Potiskum).
From 1976 to 1977, he served as Undersecretary, Establishments Division of the Governor’s Office, in the North-Eastern State Government. In the same year he was appointed Acting Permanent Secretary, Administration, in the Governor’s Office. The following year (1978), he was posted to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Information. He was confirmed Permanent Secretary in 1979 and posted to the Ministry of Health. From January to June 1984, he was the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance. In June 1984, he was posted to Governor’s Office and remained there till September when he was appointed Sole Administrator, Monguno Local Government. He retired from Public Service on 18th November 1985.
Since retirement he has served the society in various capacities. The positions he held are: Chairman, Borno State Hotels and Tourism Board (1986 to 1987), Chairman, Governing Council, College of Education, Waka, Biu (1987 to 1989), Member, Governing Board, Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) (1988 to 1989) and Member, National Advisory Council for the National Directorate of Employment (1990). For ten years, (1991 to 2001), Alhaji Abba Kyari Kura was Commissioner 1 in the Borno State Civil Service Commission (CSC). From 2002 to 2006, he served as Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), his last station being Damaturu, Yobe State.
He is a widely traveled man, having visited Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ghana, Niger, Chad and the United Kingdom. He has also visited France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Luxemburg. He was also in Hungary, Bulgaria, Pakistan, India, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore.
His hobbies are: general reading, studying Islamic history and literature, walking, traveling, rearing livestock.
