As it has been the tradition with Moslem families, young Shettima was given to his grandfather (a learned Qur’anic and Islamic teacher) to read the Holy Qur’an at the age of seven. It was not until he was 11 years in 1946 that he was sent to Damaturu elementary school. He completed his Middle School Education and graduated with a distinction in 1954.
After leaving school, Alhaji Shettima became one of the pioneer Bank workers in the then Northern Nigeria, as he joined the services of the Bank of British West Africa Ltd (Now First Bank of Nigeria Plc) in January, 1955. He worked for the Bank for 8 years and resigned on his own volition to take management of an Indigenous Limited Liability Company- the Bornu Merchants of Northern Nigeria Limited by the end of 1962.
