ORDER OF PRECEDENCE IN THE SHEHU’S COURT

By
Bosoma Sheriff

Shehu Umar Ibn Abubakar Garbai, (the father of the present Shehu, Shehu Abubakar Garbai) who reigned from 1968 to 1974, emphasized the observance of order of precedence of traditional title holders in the palace. This order is applied in the sitting arrangement of the title holders in the Shehu’s court, known as ‘Kindai.’ The ‘Kindai’, is seen at its fullest attendance during celebrations such as Eid El-Fitr, Eid-El-Kabir and Eid-El- Maulud with the title holders sitting by the right and the left sides of the Shehu, who is on a royal chair, with his traditional body guards standing near and behind him. It is in the ‘Kindai’ that individuals and organizations such as village and ward heads, craft organizations, the local teachers’ union, organization of the blind and several others pay their homage to the Shehu. Historical records show that the then Waziri of Borno, Alhaji Baba Gana Abba Anas issued a circular, dated 9th August, 1973 to all district heads, heads of departments and traditional title holders to note the order of precedence. The circular says ‘’I am directed to inform you that His Highness the Shehu of Borno, following a recommendation put forward by an ad-hoc committee… appointed to sort out all the traditional titles in the Shehu’s Palace and fix their order of precedence, has agreed to endorse the recommendation of the committee as set out below.’ The following is the content of the circular, procured by the courtesy of Mallam Turab of Borno, Alhaji Abba Sanda, few years ago. The circular also contains list of traditional and hereditary first class title holders.
