Wednesday, the 3rd of June was a red letter day in the history of female titles in Borno, for it was on that day that the Shehu of Borno, Shehu Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi apportioned the three titles of Ya Gumsu. Ya Kurjiloma and Ya Grema (which are the preserve of the spouses of the Shehu) to three of his wives. The highest among three titles is Ya Gumsu. Ya Gumsu's first name or su fulaibe as the Kanuri call it, is Hajja Falmata. She was born in Maiduguri in 1967.She attended Gamboru Primary School Maiduguri between 1972 and 1979. After her primary education, she proceeded to Day Women Teachers’ College, Nguru (WTC Nguru) and studied there up to 1982. From 1982 to 1984, she was in Day Women Teachers’ College (Day WTC) where she obtained her Grade 11 Teachers Certificate . In 1995 she enrolled as a student in Kashim Ibrahim College of Education, Maiduguri (the premier College of Education in Borno State). She studied Primary Education and Islamic Studies in the College (PES/ISS) and obtained the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1998. Until her appointment as Ya Gumsu, she had been the Headmistress of Goni Damngari Primary School of Jere Local Government. Ya Gumsu is blessed with nine children: three girls and six boys. The first name of the holder of the second title (Ya Kurjiloma) is Hajja Bintu. She was born in Bama town in 1967. She attended Kasugula Primary School, Bama from 1973 to 1979. She did her post primary education in Government Girls College, Miringa from 1979 to 1984. In 1995 she proceeded to the University of Maiduguri where she enrolled for Diploma in Social Work, which she obtained in 1997. She also enrolled for Advanced Diploma in Local Government in the same University in 1999 and successfully completed the course the following year (2000). She started work in 1986 as a Clerical Officer in the Local Government System. Until her appointment as Ya Kurjiloma, she had been a High Executive Officer, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. Ya Kurjiloma is blessed with six children: three boys and three girls. The first name of the third title holder (Ya Grema) is Aisha. She is the newest spouse of the Shehu. She is 22 years old. She attended Mafoni Primary School, Maiduguri, and completed her post primary education in Lamisula Secondary School, Maiduguri in the year 2004. zurück
