The BMDP was founded in 1987 upon the initiative of Wilhelm Seidensticker and Artur Simon, Professor at the Department of Ethnomusicology at the Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin. The finances were partly provided by the German Foreign Office, partly by the Museum, which sponsored the technical equipment, purchase of musical instruments in Borno and fieldwork all lover Borno. The active phase of the project lasted from 1987 to 1989. The tapes, recorders and instruments are safely kept at the Department of Creative Arts of University of Maiduguri whose personnel continues to record performances. As Kanuri material the audio and video recordings, which were mainly organized by Raimund Vogels and Chris Mtaku, contain court music from the bands of the Waziri of Borno and of certain District Heads, dance music of the ‘dunu’, ‘gangafero’ and other types, marriage songs and the ‘dela’ type and some recordings of the ‘dowodowo’ puppet play performed by Shettima Kafi in 1989.
